Mount Vernon To Retire Shamoya McKenzie's Basketball Jersey
Police say she was killed by a member of a Mount Vernon gang called the Goonies who was trying to shoot someone else.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Nadine McKenzie was driving eastbound along East Third Street in Mount Vernon at about 2:28 p.m. Dec. 31, 2016 with her 13-year-old daughter Shamoya in the passenger seat and Prince Scott in the back. Police say members of a Mount Vernon gang called the Goonies had targeted Scott.
Police said David Hardy fired a handgun at the car several times. Scott was hit twice. One bullet smashed through the rear passenger window and struck McKenzie in the head. McKenzie, a rising high school basketball star who wanted to play for UConn, was killed.
Now the school is honoring Shamoya's memory by retiring her basketball jersey.
