MOUNT VERNON – In solidarity with the Mount Vernon families that lost loved ones in the Dominican Republic, the Mount Vernon Rising event previously scheduled for Tuesday, April 16 has been postponed to Tuesday, May 14.

Mount Vernon residents Orlando Moore and Portia Ravenelle recently died while vacationing in the Dominican Republic.

“Any loved one lost from Mount Vernon is a loved one lost for all of us, and we are heartbroken by the loss of Orlando Moore and Portia Ravenelle,” said Mayor Richard Thomas. “We keep their family, children, and loved ones in prayer during this time of grief.”

Mayor Richard Thomas, the Mount Vernon Industrial Development Agency and the Mount Vernon Department of Recreation will host a screening on City Hall Plaza on Tuesday, May 14 to debut “MOUNT VERNON RISING,” a short film promotional campaign.

The Mount Vernon Rising event will celebrate Mount Vernon’s future and its attractiveness as a location for businesses, new residential development and recreation.

Mayor Thomas will screen the new promotional film celebrating Mount Vernon’s progress and he will welcome celebrity guests, including:

  • R&B vocal group Force M.D.’s, best known for two tunes that are widely considered 1980s quiet storm classics, "Tender Love" and "Love is a House"
  • Talent from UniverSoul Circus, who will offer previews of their shows at Hutchinson Field from May 15 until May 27.

A super-hot DJ will provide music, plus free popcorn will be served. Seating will be first come, first served.
