Mount Vernon School District Budget Vote Tuesday

MOUNT VERNON, NY — The voters will have the final say on the proposed school budget on Tuesday.

The proposed budget is $266,743,231, with a 2.75 percent increase over the 2021-22 spending package. The tax levy will be increased by 0.5%.

"This budget continues the progress we have made in improving academics and serving all students. It also helps us recover from the challenges that a worldwide pandemic brought us, while remaining mindful of the burden that that same pandemic placed on so many of our residents," Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton said in a statement asking voters to approve the budget.

The school board says the proposed budget will allow Mount Vernon schools to provide additional security resources, maintain teaching and staffing levels, address the pandemic's impact with two additional social workers and four additional school psychologists, continue a pilot dual-language kindergarten program and expand the International Baccalaureate program.

Four Board of Education Trustee seats will be on the ballot, including one unexpired portion of a term that will run through June 30, 2023. Candidates include:

• Marc Stuckey

The proposed library budget for 2022-23 is $5,044,157, an increase of 5.25 percent, or $17.98 per household.
