Mount Vernon Tax Preparer Faces 50 Counts of Filing False Tax Returns

The alleged crimes occurred between 2009 and 2012.

MOUNT VERNON, NY - A Mount Vernon tax preparer is facing a 50-count indictment relating to fraudulent income tax returns for his clients.

Samuel Gentle, 59, was arraigned today in White Plains federal court, said Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

“As alleged, Samuel Gentle abused his position of trust as a tax preparer by systematically assisting taxpayers in filing false and fraudulent returns,” Bharara said.

“Today’s charges underscore our commitment to pursuing and prosecuting individuals who seek to enable and encourage tax fraud,” he said.

According to the indictment, the loss from Gentle’s conduct was more than $630,000.

He operated GenGen Inc., based in Mount Vernon.

From 2009 through 2012, his business prepared and submitted an average of 3,400 tax returns each year, some of which were false and fraudulent because they allegedly contained various inflated deductions for business expenses and gifts to charity.

Gentle is charged with 50 counts of aiding and assisting the preparation of false and fraudulent U.S. individual income tax returns.

Each count carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.
