MOUNT VERNON, NY — Earlier this month, an opportunistic thief not only stole an unattended car, but also made off with a beloved family pet at the same time.

On January 7, a Honda Pilot was left running and unattended on the 200 block of West 1st Street. An unknown thief drove off with the SUV. The Pilot has not been seen since and there have been no license plate reader hits on the car after it was stolen.

Police are asking the community to be on the lookout for the car, because it seems this was no ordinary car theft.

There was a dog named Nile in the Honda when it was stolen. Like the stolen car, the dog has not yet been found.

"I am currently a stay-at-home mom and money has been very tight, and this was one of the last things we've ever thought would happen to us," Nile's owner, Stephanie Diaz said in a GoFundMe asking the community for help. "Any donation helps and is appreciated. If things don't turn the way we plan and we don't find our baby, then I will be donating the proceeds to an animal shelter we find fit ... It’s been 12 days without our baby."
