Opening Of Free Clothing Store At Benjamin Turner Keeps A Legacy Alive
"Judy's Closet," pays tribute to a longtime special-ed math teacher who would "buy meals and clothing for students without telling anyone."

MOUNT VERNON, NY — "Judy’s Closet," a free clothing store for parents in the Mount Vernon City School District community, recently held its grand opening at the Benjamin Turner Middle School and the moment recalled the legacy of a longtime teacher who made a point of ensuring that her students didn't go without.
Community school coordinator, Lisa Autieri said people from the community, including many members of staff, came together to donate all the items in the closet. There are jackets, shoes, pants, shirts, dresses, and more for children of all sizes. The clothing racks were fully funded overnight when Autieri shared her needs on Donors Choose, a website where teachers can seek donations.
"In the spirit of a true community school, Judy’s Closet is just one small part of removing barriers that families face," Principal Christopher Pearce said.

It was named after Judy Paul who was a longtime special education math teacher within the Mount Vernon City School District. She recently passed away suddenly.

"Judy was the type of person that would go buy meals and clothing for students without telling anyone," said Autieri. "Whatever her kids needed she got for them."

Most of Paul's family was in attendance — her husband, children, grandchildren and sister were on hand. School staff at the opening shed tears when they recognized Paul's face in her grandchildren. Pictures of the beloved teacher are displayed on the walls along with some of her clothing, that was donated by her family.
"Judy would give away everything and anything," Paul's sister, Debra Morris, recalled. "She would just empty her closet sometimes."
Judy's Closet is located in the Family Resource Room on the fourth floor of the middle school, and will be open every Thursday from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. This will be a room where parents and family members can come to attend workshops and seek assistance. They will also have the opportunity to pick up clothing items.
"This is beautiful. This is so Judy," Starling Churn, a teacher at Edward Williams School and local pastor at The Community Church of Morrisania in the Bronx, said. "We don’t just teach; we leave a legacy."

"When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully everyone is blessed," said Pamela Valdovinos, parent liaison.
