Results: Close In Mount Vernon Democratic Mayoral Primary

About 7,000 people voted in Tuesday's primary to choose candidates for mayor and city council on the Democratic lines on November's ballot.

Too close to call: Here are the unofficial election results from Tuesday's Democratic primary for mayor and city council. About 7,000 people voted.

In the race for the Democratic spot on the ballot in November, incumbent Lisa Copeland won. The second slot was narrowly won by Derrick Thompson, according to unofficial results.

In the mayoral race, no one received a majority. Former planning commissioner Shawyn Patterson Howard received 33 percent of the vote, the highest amount.

However, absentee votes and other ballots still need to be counted.

Incumbent Mayor Richard Thomas did not concede, given how close the results were.

The frontrunners were Howard and Thomas, favored by roughly one in three voters. Former police commissioner Clyne Isley received 20% of the vote and current City Council President Andre Wallace 17%.

Wallace, however, will be on the ballot in November on the Republican line.
