Scam Alert: Yonkers PD Warns Scammers Are Spoofing Police Phone Number

Conmen use local precinct phone numbers on caller ID to make victims think the solicitations are legit, but calls often originate overseas.

YONKERS, NY —The Yonkers Police Department is warning residents about another scam going on in the area.

They have received reports that unknown scammers are calling residents and community members and impersonating Yonkers police officers, often threatening imminent arrests and fraudulently demanding immediate payment of fines or soliciting donations on behalf of the department.

Police department phone numbers, including the 4th Precinct's 914-377-7402 number, are being spoofed on caller ID, making targets believe that the call is originating from the Yonkers Police Department.

Yonkers police are currently investigating this scam. However, it seems that these calls often originate outside their jurisdiction, often overseas.

They ask that residents be aware that no government entity would ever call to demand payment or make threats. The best course of action if you receive an unsolicited call, is to simply hang up. If you want to verify the caller, call them back directly.

If any residents or community members have been defrauded by this scam, they are asked to call Yonkers PD at 914-377-7900 to file a complaint.

Police ask that this information be shared with neighbors, especially seniors who may not be on social media.
