Sunday Shooting, Arrest On Ash Street

The suspect was in a locked apartment with his relatives.

YONKERS, NY — A man was shot in the chest at about 2 a.m. Sunday. The Yonkers Police Department responded to 102 Ash St. and located the victim, a 20-year-old Yonkers resident.

Officers ascertained that a possible suspect was still in the building. They established a tactical perimeter as they began the criminal investigation.

The victim was transported by Empress EMS to a local hospital.

Members of the Emergency Service Unit and Crisis Negotiation Team made contact with the suspect who was in his locked second floor apartment with relatives. ESU and CNT officers were able to place the suspect into custody without incident.

Detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene, interviewing subjects and witnesses, recovering surveillance video, executing search warrants and processing forensic and ballistic evidence.

They recovered a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Police said the victim and suspect were known to each other, and were involved in an earlier dispute that escalated into violence.

The suspect was identified as Shareaf J. Brown, 25, of Yonkers.

Brown was arrested and charged with one count of Assault 1°, a Class B Felony in the NYS Penal Law, and is expected to be arraigned on Monday. The case will be prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.

The victim is listed in stable condition with a non-life-threatening injury.

“I commend the exceptional efforts of our police officers, detectives, and members of the Emergency Service Unit and Crisis Negotiation Team, all of whom working together ended a violent situation without further incident and delivered the perpetrator into the Criminal Justice System where he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said.

Booking charges are merely accusations and the defendant(s) are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
