Thomas, Advisors Depart Mount Vernon City Hall: News Report
A judge rejected the former mayor's argument that he could stay in office till Sept. 1.
MOUNT VERNON, NY — The Mount Vernon City Council has succeeded in ousting Mayor Richard Thomas and replacing him with their former president, Andre Wallace. Thomas, who was to step down Sept. 30 in a plea bargain with the New York Attorney General's Office OK'd by the court, had argued that the council could not remove him before then, but State Supreme Court Justice Lawrence Ecker said the plea bargain did not supercede the city charter, The Journal News reported.
Wallace has taken several personnel actions, including suspending Thomas advisors Corporation Counsel Lawrence Porcari and Human Resources Commissioner Nina Crispino (also strategic director of the Mount Vernon Industrial Development Agency). They and Thomas cleaned out their offices, TJN reported.
Wallace re-appointed Shawn Harris as police commissioner.
