YONKERS, NY — A Sunday evening fire in a small apartment building in Yonkers killed one person and injured several. The blaze at 110-112 Saratoga Ave. was reported at 8 p.m.
More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze. Yonkers fire officials said 16 suffered minor injuries. The fire, which spread to the cockloft in the 4-story building, took several hours to get under control.
The Red Cross worked with six displaced families — 26 adults and seven children, plus several pets. Working with the Yonkers office of emergency management, the Red Cross opened a reception center to give the fire victims a warm place to go away from the scene, said Caroline Sherwin .

"Our thoughts are with the family, friends and the city of Yonkers," Sherwin said. "We had five volunteers on scene and people working behind the scenes. We were able to provide all the needed emergency assistance — financial for relocation and personal property replacement; plus lots of comfort kids for kids and adults both."
