Coronavirus: Rockland Starts 'Shopping For Seniors' Program

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — The Rockland County Office for the Aging has collaborated with several partners to develop a Shopping for Seniors program. Senior citizens are at higher risk of getting very sick from the new coronavirus.

"As health officials urge people older than 60 to stay at home during the coronavirus outbreak, many seniors have no way to get groceries," organizers explained.

So, volunteers will shop for and deliver groceries to seniors 60+ who are unable to leave their homes.

Volunteers will deliver groceries to the senior’s doorstep while observing proper physical distancing guidelines, organizers said.

Seniors are responsible for their grocery bill. The shopping and delivery service will be provided free of additional charges.

The federal Centers for Disease Control has a webpage for senior citizens and others who are at higher risk in the new coronavirus pandemic. The CDC experts recommend:

• Stock up on supplies.
• Take everyday precautions to keep space between yourself and others.
• When you go out in public, keep away from others who are sick, limit close contact and wash your hands often.
• Avoid crowds as much as possible.
• Avoid cruise travel and non-essential air travel.
• During a COVID-19 outbreak in your community, stay home as much as possible to further reduce your risk of being exposed.
