NY Adds 2 More States To Coronavirus Quarantine List

Travelers from Hawaii, South Dakota and the U.S. Virgin Islands must quarantine if they visit New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.

NEW YORK CITY — Give up those coronavirus Hawaii getaway daydreams.

Travelers from Hawaii, South Dakota and the U.S. Virgin Islands must quarantine for 14 days once they step foot in New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday.

Infection rates in the Aloha State, the Mount Rushmore State and the island territory reached above safe thresholds, according to a release.

Cuomo has repeatedly said the travel advisory is to help keep New York's COVID-19 levels, once the worst in the nation, at their current low levels.

"In order to protect this progress, we must keep up our efforts - we cannot go back to the hell we experienced a few months ago, which is why we are adding Hawaii, South Dakota and Virgin Islands to the travel advisory," Cuomo said in a statement.

The quarantine list now stands at 33 states which have either a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a seven-day rolling average, or an area with a 10 percent or higher positivity rate over a seven-day rolling average, a release states.

Hawaii's coronavirus numbers may have risen above that level, but four other states fell.

Alaska, New Mexico, Ohio and Rhode Island have been removed from the list, according to a release. But people who traveled from those states and are currently in quarantine should remain so for the whole 14 days, the release states.

New York's current coronavirus positive rate is 0.86 percent, the release states.
