• Lower East Side Parishioners Mourn Loss of 'Spiritual Home' (nytimes.com subscription) — Lower East Side parishioners are still gathering outside the locked gates of Most Holy Redeemer, a 175-year-old Catholic church that stopped weekly Mass last year, to pray for its survival. With only two annual services now allowed and limited explanation from the Archdiocese of New York, many longtime members fear losing what they call their true spiritual home.
• New York's Latest Famous Family Is a Hoot. Yes, They're Owls. (nytimes.com) — A family on the Upper West Side has discovered a rare group of barn owls nesting atop a nearby water tower, turning them into unexpected neighborhood celebrities. From nightly eerie screeches to close flybys near Central Park West, these unusual Manhattan visitors are delighting residents and drawing attention from local media and bird lovers across New York City.
• Mullin defends ICE agent's actions in New York shooting, condemns sanctuary cities (borderreport.com) — New Yorkers are hearing sharply different explanations after an ICE officer shot a man during an arrest attempt in New York, with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin defending the agent and blasting sanctuary city policies. Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani have condemned the shooting as an outrage, while federal officials portray the suspect as a dangerous repeat offender and vow to keep targeting what they call the "worst of the worst."
