Richard Gadd, creator, writer, executive producer, and star of HBO’s Half-Man, joins entertainment journalist Jessica Shaw for a conversation about the making of one of television’s most provocative new dramas.
Gadd, nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Performing Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, takes us inside his performance as Ruben Pallister and the long road to bringing Half-Man to the screen. He began writing the series in 2019, then set it aside when Baby Reindeer was commissioned. Four years later, he returned to it, spending two intense years shaping the story.
At its center is the volatile relationship between two men who think of themselves as brothers, traced across three decades. Dark, funny, shocking, and deeply uncomfortable, Half-Man explores masculinity, repression, intimacy, and the damage people do to each other when they cannot say what they mean or confront who they are.
