De Blasio To Biden: You’re Really, Really Unpopular Just Like Me
"When it comes to being unpopular, I'm unfortunately somewhat of an expert," the former mayor wrote in a new Atlantic essay.
NEW YORK CITY — Bill de Blasio may have landed his ideal post-mayoral gig: an expert adviser on being deeply unpopular.
And the man formerly known as Hizzoner has set his sights on as his first, unsolicited client? President Joe Biden.
In an Atlantic essay titled “Joe Biden Can Learn From My Mistakes,” de Blasio more-or-less copped to being despised by New Yorkers when he left Gracie Mansion.

“When it comes to being unpopular, I’m unfortunately somewhat of an expert,” de Blasio wrote.
But the city's former mayor didn’t lay the blame for his unpopularity on breaking a long string of promises, stubbornly insisting on regular visits to the Park Slope Y, perpetual tardiness at events or generally squandering the goodwill that swept him into office in 2013.

In essence, de Blasio argued the real reason he left office as more unpopular than both former President Donald Trump and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo was that New Yorkers hadn't recognized all the good things he'd done.
De Blasio argued his individual policies themselves were popular but pursuing them distracted him “from offering an overarching vision for the future” to New Yorkers.
“I should have walked among them rather than just working for them behind closed doors,” de Blasio wrote. “Voters need to know both what you’re up to and why you’re up to it. You have to help them feel your efforts.
“I lost my connection with the people because I mistook real policy for real popularity."
Biden is repeating that mistake, de Blasio argued.
“As the mayor of New York City, I had one of the loudest megaphones in the country, and I failed to use it properly,” wrote de Blasio.
“Biden’s bully pulpit is a thousand times more powerful. He needs to use it to show that he truly empathizes with everyday Americans on the issues they care most about, such as inflation, public safety, and affordable health care.”
