Meet the Woman Behind 'Pokemon Go of New York'
This Instagram account parodies Humans of New York by making Pokemon Go characters the interviewees.
Pokemon Go of New York is Peak 2016. The Instagram account takes Pokemon Go characters around the city and quotes them as if they were Humans of New York (HONY), the popular blog with intimate interviews of New Yorkers spilling their personal beans.
"I play anywhere from three to seven shows a week but it's still not enough to pay the bills so I still grab odd jobs here and there. Kinda expected, I know, the "starving artist" painting your apartment, but you do what you have to. Being a songwriter is where the money's at - not playing in a band. All I need is one of my tracks to get picked up and I know it'll take off." . . . #Pokemon #pokemongo #pokemoncommunity #pokemonofnewyork #singer #band #music #musician #band #starvingartist #nyc #newyorkcity

The woman behind the account, who preferred to remain anonymous, says she thought of the idea because there was something so funny to her about seeing the Pokemon characters just hanging out throughout the city landscape. She started giving the different Pokemon distinct personalities and imagining the way they'd talk with her friends, and that joke evolved into the Instagram parody account.
"It's so funny to look at a picture of an Eevee and imagine it struggling with why it hasn't been to the gym in a while, or an opinionated Arbok weighing in on hipster culture and fashion, or a Diglett talking about the lottery," she told Patch.

"My parents have been divorced for as long as I can remember. It happened when I was 2 or 3. As a teenager I would catch these glimpses of them interacting with each other that were really pleasant and I'd wonder what their relationship was like when it was good. It's just something I've never seen, ya know? Now the only times we are all together are when I'm being passed back and forth...like a hot potato jamming up their social lives." . . . #Pokemon #pokemongo #pokemonofnewyork #pokemoncommunity #newyork #nyc #parents #bull #sundaymorning

Like most people, the woman behind the account has calmed down on Pokemon Go since it was first released in the U.S. at the beginning of July. But she still very much appreciates the sense of community it brought to New Yorkers. She felt solidarity with dozens of other players she observed searching for Pokemon in Central Park alongside her, and they all helped each other.
"If you find an Ivysaur in the park, you can't keep that information to yourself!" she said.
