Half-Price Transit Expands For More NYC Riders (patch.com) — New Yorkers who rely on subways, buses, and Access-A-Ride could see big savings as the city's Fair Fares program expands to cover residents earning up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Streamlined enrollment through SNAP and cash-assistance renewals aims to make it easier for eligible New York City adults to get half-price rides, with the Department of Social Services required to boost outreach and report annually on usage.
   

2. NYC Tax Break Covers More Renovation Costs (patch.com) — Co-op, condo, and some rental owners across New York City may benefit from a newly extended J-51 property-tax break that now covers more renovation work and higher-value apartments. With eligibility expanded for projects completed between 2026 and 2036, the program could help finance critical building repairs and energy upgrades in all five boroughs.
   

3. Rent Freeze Stays, But NYC Lawsuit Isn't Over (patch.com) — New York City renters in stabilized apartments will keep their current rents for now, after a Manhattan judge declined to undo the Rent Guidelines Board's June rent freeze before Oct. 1. The lawsuit by landlords challenging the freeze continues, and the judge has ordered Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration to turn over City Hall communications with the board as he weighs whether the rent-setting process must start over.
   

4. Starbucks To Close 250 Stores This Week: What NYC Customers Need To Know (patch.com) — New Yorkers who rely on Starbucks may soon see some neighborhood locations shuttered, as the chain prepares to close about 250 underperforming North American stores this week. While the company hasn't said which of the roughly 720 New York City shops are affected, it plans to transfer local workers where possible and continue renovating and expanding other sites.
   

5. Greek Social Enterprise Enaleia Makes New York Debut at Climate Week 2026 (thenationalherald.com) — Climate Week NYC is bringing global environmental innovators into New York City, including Greek social enterprise Enaleia, which is exploring ways to expand its marine plastic cleanup model beyond the Mediterranean. Their representative spent the week networking at high-level sustainability and finance events around town, underscoring how New York has become a hub where climate policy, big business, and grassroots ideas intersect.
