NEW YORK CITY — Highly infectious new coronavirus variants now account for more than 70 percent of new cases in New York City, but are prevalent in different boroughs, according to a new study.

A study released Monday by city health officials provides a detailed look into the spread of two coronavirus variants across the boroughs.

The growth of B.1.1.7 — the "UK variant" — and the homegrown B.1.526 variant could explain the city's persistently steady recent COVID-19 levels, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene report study states.

"This suggests the spread of specific variants, potentially due to their greater infectiousness, which is one reason why COVID-19 cases in NYC remain at a high plateau of between 3,000 to 4,000 new cases each day," the study states.

Both variants are found in all five boroughs, but each is more common in specific areas, according to the study.

The UK variant is slightly more common in southern Brooklyn, eastern Queens, and Staten Island, the study states. A map shows the ZIP Codes 11004 and 11005 in Queens, which cover Glen Oaks and Floral Park, have between 80 and 100 percent prevalence — the highest in the city.

Likewise, the 10018 ZIP covering the Garment District and parts of Midtown, also appears to have that 80 to 100 percent prevalence.

The B.1.526 variant is slightly more common in the Bronx and parts of Queens, according to the study.

The 10471 ZIP Codes, which covers North Riverdale, appears to have the highest prevalence at between 60 and 80 percent, according to the map.

Patch requested more ZIP Code-specific data on the variants from the health department.

"At the moment the maps are what we’re presenting," a spokesperson said.
