Surviving New York's Harsh Winter

Despite the challenges, maintaining a mixed diet can help with the severe weather.

NEW YORK – With temperatures reaching lowest of 26° and highest of 33°, it was quite bearable considering the previous weeks’ freezing weather. The roads have been slippery with casual slips here and there. Moreover, the power disruption on the subway station yesterday, had left the commuters frustrated. Adding to these constraints, New Yorkers are experiencing the worst flu in years; based on New York Times article on Flu season. Around 23,000 people were hospitalized and about 80,000 suffered death at the hands of the disease, the previous year.

As fun as it is when it snows, winter can be tough especially with the challenges which it brings along:

  • Diseases
  • Laziness (the unavoidable truth)
  • Inaccessible roads
  • And cold weather

Vegetables with roots (Root vegetables)

Carrots, turnips and beet roots are highly nutritious and can help against stubborn allergies and common cold. Often there is isn’t enough time in our daily routine to make a diet chart or to ensure a proper intake of essential nutrients. Therefore, you can use these vegetables through the methods mentioned below, in order to stay healthy and save time.

Drinking a glass of beet root daily makes sure you are taking up all the necessary vitamins such as Vitamin C, which facilitates the absorption of iron in our bodies. Aside from the vitamins, beet root contains anti-oxidants and fiber. Fiber helps regulate the intestinal function of the body, preventing constipation. Anti-oxidants help in significantly strengthening your immune system.

Carrots are especially good for your eyes since they contain the crucial Vitamin A, known as the retinal.
