“He hated the police, he saw us as the bad guys,” said Police Commissioner James O’Neill at the funeral. “This was an act of hate.”
O’Neill later promoted Familia to the highest rank of detective.
Familia’s family remembered her as a dedicated police officer, a loving mother to her three kids and the warm baby sister to nine brothers and sisters.
Her daughter, Genesis, 20, expressed gratitude that the last time she saw her mother — when Familia left for work for the last time on July 4 — the two women hugged and said ‘I love you.’
“I know she passed with love in her heart, with our love in her heart,” said Genesis, who wrapped her arms around her sister Delilah and her brother Peter, both 12-years-old. “She’s still looking down on us, she’s still taking care of us.”
“She loved us,” said Peter. “She wanted to sacrifice for us, so she did it.”
Familia’s sister Mercedes, who addressed the congregation with her brothers and sisters standing behind her, and said that Miosotis had wanted to be a police officer ever since she was a teenager at John F. Kennedy high school.
“Please if you see a police officer in blue, hug them and say, 'Thank you,'” said Mercedes. “That’s all she would have asked for.”
The funeral for Officer Familia was held at the World Changers Church on Grand Concourse Avenue near 187th street at 10 a.m.
