Boulders Fall to Quebec, 5-3, in 11 Innings

Rockland loses 3-0 lead in 9th inning as Capitales tie game, forcing extra sets.

Rockland Boulders’ starter Bobby Blevins threw eight strong innings, and catcher John Fitzpatrick chipped in with two RBIs, however, it was not enough as the Quebec Capitales came back to win 5-3 in 11 innings on Saturday night in Can-Am League baseball action.

Leading 3-0 and heading into the ninth, Rockland was three outs away from picking up their first win over Quebec, but the Capitales scored three unanswered to tie it off Boulders’ closer Adrian Martin.

Blevins, who went eight innings in his last start on Monday against New Jersey, shut down the Quebec offense by holding the two-time Can-Am League champions to only four hits while striking a season-high seven batters.

The Boulders threatened to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with one out.  Jermel Lomack opened the frame off with a single, which was then followed by a Sean Smith single after Ryan Mollica flew out to left field.  Quebec took their chances for the double play, and intentionally walked Vic Buttler to put three Boulders on.  Dustin Smith had the opportunity to drive in teammates, however Capitales’ starter Bryan Rembisz forced Smith to ground into a 5-2-3 double play.

After Blevins shut down Quebec in the top of the eighth, Rockland finally broke the gridlock in the bottom of the frame to take a 1-0 lead.  Lomack, again, led off with a single, and later came around to score after Capitales’ shortstop Seth Henry committed an error.  Fitzpatrick capped the frame off with a double to plate Buttler and Sean Smith.

In the top of the 11th, Goefrey Tomlinson singled home Rene Levert and Dan Barbero off Boulders’ reliever Kyle Wilson to give Quebec a 5-3 lead.  Rockland left Tommy Giles stranded on second in the bottom half of the inning and dropped their second straight to the Capitales.

Wilson is charged with his second straight loss on the season after allowing two runs on one hit.  Guillaume Duguay nabbed the win for Quebec striking out three over two innings.

Roger Lincoln gets the nod for the Boulders in the series finale on this afternoon. Opposing him is Dan Sausville for Quebec.
