Clarkstown North Senior Is 'Heart Of A Giant' Finalist [VIDEO]

Unparalleled work ethic, a passion for the game — and adversity overcome to reach a standout place.

NEW CITY, NY — Clarkstown North High School's own Ryan Cox is one of the seven finalists for USA Football’s Heart of a Giant Award. The annual award goes to someone who demonstrates unparalleled work ethic and a passion for the game.

Section 1 All-Section, All-League, Linebacker of the Year, the senior was nominated based on his commitment, teamwork, will, character and dedication, and made it all the way to the finals. As part of the program, each of the seven finalists receives a $1,500 equipment grant for their high school’s football program, with the winner receiving an additional $3,500 equipment grant for his school.

USA Football, Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants will review all finalist video submissions and identify one grand prize winner.

Cox overcame a chaotic home life and numerous custody battles, one won by his heroin-addicted mother and another by the father who fought to get him back.

He became a standout player for the Clarkstown North football team.

As he describes in his video, Cox was taken aback when he was nominated by his coach, Joe Trongone. "Everyone goes through adversity," he said.

On the video, Coach Mullane describes Cox as one of the finest men he has ever known — much older than his years in his ability to care for those around him while keeping focused on his mission.

The winner of the 2017 Heart of a Giant Award will be honored on the field when the Giants host the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium on Dec. 17.
