Countywide Turnout For Skills Competition At NCLL's ARC Tourney

Players show off their abilities.

The annual New City Little League Baseball All Star Invitational Tournament for the benefit of the ARC of Rockland picked things up early on Saturday morning. The skills competition, originally planned for a noon start time, was pushed up because of the heat and kicked off just after 9 a.m.

The highlights of the skills competition were the “Speed Around the Bases” and “Home Run Derby” portions. The “Speed Around the Bases” is a competition where each participant must keep one foot on home plate and take off around the bases as quickly as possible.

Rob Scheppis of Stony Point took the first place medal by registering a 11.52 in the final round of the competition. Nanuet’s Brian McGreavy earned the second place medal after running a11.64 in the final round. However, it was McGreavy who ran the fastest overall time when he clocked in at 11.47 in his first round run.

The home run derby was one for the record books. Despite rising temperatures, these little leaguers were able to keep cool and blast home runs out of the park in every direction. Every car in the parking lot was sweating, not from the heat, from fear of a smashed windshield. Luckily there were no windshield casualties.

Nanuet’s Brian Oliveros, who smashed 11 home runs in his opening round and grabbed everyone’s attention, found himself in a tie breaker round against Stony Point’s Shane Phillips after they both tied with five home runs in the second round.

It was always going to be Oliveros on Saturday. The towering shots he hit in the opening rounds kept coming right up through his final swing. Oliveros dropped his bat and threw his hands in the air.

“I didn’t really think I would hit that many today but surprisingly I did,” said Oliveros. “I was really nervous coming into the final round. I only needed 2 and I knew I could get it. I tried a bit too hard with my first swings but then I started connecting again.”

The 2010 tournament began Thursday, July 15 and will conclude with the finals on Thursday, July 22. Most of the county is represented in the tournament so go check out a game and support your local team.
