New City’s Conor Carlucci finished 112th out of more than 140 swimmers in the 100 meter breaststroke last Monday night at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb.
The former Condors swimmer in the Rockland County Summer Swim League who just graduated from Brown University was competing for a shot to go to this summer’s London Olympics. Carlucci finished with a time of 1:05.27 in the race. The top 16 competitors advanced to the semifinals, which were also Monday night.
"Trials were awesome," said Carlucci. "The experience exceeded all my expectations, and considering how much I've been swimming, I was very happy with how I performed. The city of Omaha did an awesome job hosting. I found it really awesome how welcoming and excited the people of the city were, it was a cool time for the city as they were hosting both Olympic Trials and the College World Series."

Bronxville 16-year-old Patrick Conaton isn’t heading to London either, but he’s still pleased with his performance at this past weekend’s Olympic Trials in Ohama, Neb.
“Going to the meet, I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve never been to a meet of that caliber,” he said. “It was a great experience. Overall, I think it went really well. My swims weren’t my best times, but the experience overall was great, and it’s something I can learn from and use to get better.”
Conaton swam in the 200 meter backstroke, finishing 88th out of the 100-plus swimmers. He finished the race in 2:06.73. The first round of his race, and the finals the next night, were won by Ryan Lochte, one of America’s top swimmers. Lochte qualified for four individual events at the Olympics.
Heading into his junior year at Fordham Prep, Conaton feels like the taste of big meet experience he received at the trials will keep him working hard.
“Seeing all those guys posting all those fast times, and they’re all jacked and buff, it definitely inspires me to get to that level,” he said. “If I keep working hard and improving, I can definitely see myself getting there in four years. It’s inspiring, it keeps me going.”
Later this summer, Conaton will compete in either the U.S. Open or Junior Nationals, and in the winter he hops to compete in states and winter nationals. Thanks to his trip to the trials, Conaton now has a feel for big meets and said he should feel comfortable at any of those. This past weekend, he wasn’t totally comfortable at first in that size meet.
“I was nervous,” he said. “There were like 10,000 people, so that’s like 10,000 more than I’m used to.”
New Rochelle Teen Misses Out On Olympic Bid
Emily Escobedo also won’t be heading to London this summer, as the 16-year-old from New Rochelle competed in the 200 meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials this past weekend in Omaha.
Her time of 2:36.07 placed her 58th out of 120-plus.
Escobedo will be a senior in the fall at Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale.
