Deportation and Child Care Forum Sunday For Haitian Community

Rockland is home to one of New York's largest Haitian communities, including those who have lost Temporary Protected Status.

SPRING VALLEY, NY — To help Haitian families in Rockland County, Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee is helping to host two workshops Sunday. Her district is home to one of New York state’s largest Haitian communities, many of whom have lost Temporary Protected Status and must return to the island nation.

“President Trump’s decision to discontinue the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation granted to Haitian Nationals after the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010, is just one of the decisions that will have a profound effect on family structures and care-giving responsibilities across the country, New York State, and in the 97th Assembly District," said Jaffee, Chair of the Committee on Children and Families.

Jaffee (D-Suffern), in partnership with New York State Kinship Navigator, St. Joseph's Parish, and Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland, will hold workshops for “Kinship Caregivers."

The goal of the forums is to inform the community about the rights and resources available. New York’s Kinship Navigator and many of the services that will be discussed are critical to ensure those taking care of children who are affected by parental deportation and other issues are provided support, she said.

Topics to be covered include:
