The Monster Engine is a collaborative project between art students at Bardonia Elementary School and South High School that aims to answer the question, “What would a child’s drawing look like if it were painted realistically?”

Bardonia art educator, Jennifer Bini, asked her 5th graders to create drawings of monsters using the elements of art and the principles of design they had learned in elementary school. South art educators Justin Sandomir and Matthew Tomaselli then visited Bardonia with their secondary students to initiate discussion about how to turn the drawings into finished acrylic paintings. Each 5th grader paired with a high school artist to collaboratively create a finished monster.

Elementary and high school students were inspired to learn that all spoke the same language of art that unified the work. The younger artists expressed desire to continue their design and illustration studies as they entered high school, and the secondary students learned the value found in mentorship.

The final projects will be shown at an art opening at The Rockland Center for the Arts in West Nyack on January 7 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
