Film Screening of "AJami"

Directed by Scandar Copti and Yaron Shani
Israel, 2009, 120 minutes, in Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles, unrated

A powerful crime drama set in a rundown multiethnic neighborhood of Jaffa whose inhabitants try—and mostly fail—to live together without hatred. Told by interweaving the stories of 5 main characters, AJAMI portrays the tragedy of social divides, not only between Arab and Jew but also Christians and Muslims, rich and poor, farmers and city dwellers, men and women, young and old. Co-written and -directed by an Israeli Arab and an Israeli Jew, whose goal was "to make the audience experience what it means to be the other."

2009 Oscar Nominee: Best Foreign Film

"Emotionally mesmerizing. Grade A" – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
