Join Docent Frank Kemmer on this 4-mile, moderate (2-sneaker) walk around a beautiful glacier lake that is 120 feet deep. Along the southern edge of the lake, the walk will go past remnants of the iron industry that operated almost 200 years ago. This includes the furnace made the iron that produced the 'great chain', which went across the Hudson River to protect the colonist from the British ships advancing up the river. The terrain is mostly level walk with one gradual slope. The Docent will discuss both history and ecology of the park. Bring along a snack to enjoy.
Walkers will meet in the parking lot across from the Visitor's Center located at 116 Old Forge Road in Tuxedo Park, NY 10987.
Directions: From Route 17 North take CR-72 Ramp, Sterling Mine Road_(which is one mile past Davis Sports Shop). Continue on CR-72 about 3.5 miles. You will come to a light. At the light make a right onto Route 84 – Long Meadow Road. There will be a sign for Sterling Forest at the intersection. Continue on Route 84 - 2 miles past IBM. Then make a left turn onto Old Forge Road – There will be a sign for the Visitor's Center. A few hundred yards from intersection is the parking lot on the right hand side of the road on top of the hill across the street from the Visitor's Center.
This walk is not stroller friendly and dogs are not allowed. There is a restroom at the Visitor's Center and a port-o-potty about 1-mile into the walk.
Participants should wear proper footwear (close-toed sturdy shoes such as walking shoes/boots or sneakers) and clothing (light-colored), and bring along sunscreen, binoculars, water and a snack, and walking sticks if desired. Hiking boots preferred.
