
Joao MacDowell, New York-based Brazilian composer and performer João MacDowell was born in Brasilia, where his professional career started as leader and vocalist of the band Tonton Macoute. Following this period, MacDowell went on to work as in Rio de Janeiro for 12 years, then in Philadelphia for 2 years, before moving to NY. During this time, João has composed soundtracks for contemporary dance, film, TV, theater and circus; produced a large number of records and released four solo albums of Brazilian music. He has recently been acclaimed for the success of his Brazilian Opera Tamanduá, a contemporary work that fuses Brazilian folk rhythms, experimentalism, and classical composition.
