A police standoff at 67 North Little Tor Road in New City ended when Clarkstown police stormed the home and found the gunman dead.

Whether the gunshot was self-inflicted or incurred during one of the firefights between the gunman and police overnight is not yet known, police said.

The conflict started at 7 p.m.

The Clarkstown crisis negotiation team was unable to make progress—in fact, the man holed up inside the house fired at police several times.

The police tried to use gas agents to drive the man out. Instead, he began to fire at police again. One round of fire was returned by a member of the police department.

After a period of inactivity, police tried sending in the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department robot; however, due to debris and items inside the house, the robot was not able to perform its intended function, police said.

Accordingly, a tactical entry was made by members of the Clarkstown Police Department Critical Incident Response Team.

The man, a 57-year-old resident of the home, was found dead, from a gunshot wound. It is unknown at this time whether the wound was self-inflicted or the result of the exchange of gunfire with police.

This investigation is continuing and further details will be released as they become available.
