New City All Stars Win First Little League World Series Game
They beat the team from Milano, Italy 7-1
The New City Little League 11-12 Softball All Stars—now the East All Stars—won their first game on Friday in the 2011 Little League World Series, 7-1 against the European representative from Milano, Italy, at Alpenrose Stadium in Portland, OR.
New City was aggressive at the plate and on the base pass from the very beginning. Sara Herskowitz singled with two outs in the first. Herskowitz stole second base and was then driven in by a single off the bat of Melanie Lerche.
“Two out hits are big and we had the plan to run often and run early today,” said New City Manager Mike Herskowitz. “We were 9 for 9 on stolen base attempts. We ran a lot on today. I don’t know if we’ll be able to do the same against other teams but we’ll see.”

Reese Guevera pitched two scoreless innings to get New City started before being relieved by Sarah Brauer. Brauer came in and pitch two shut out innings of her own. 4 of the 6 outs recorded by Brauer were via the strikeout.
New City tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth with the help of single from Kerrin Powers and a stolen base from from Madison Berkenoff. They weren’t crushing the ball in the inning, but they were putting it in play and running the bases aggressively which resulted in putting a crooked number on the board and a 5-0 lead.

Sarah Brauer found herself in a bit of a jam with two men on and only one out in the bottom of the fourth. After falling behind 3-1 in the count to one of Italy’s best hitters, Brauer reached back and fired two strikes down the pipe and got a much needed strike out and escaped the inning unharmed.
“Sarah came in to face the top of the order,” said Herskowitz. “She threw a couple of fastballs to get back into the count and she got out of the inning. It is good to see her back healthy.”
Brauer snagged a hard hit line drive to record the final out capping an outstanding offensive and defensive performance by New City.
“We’ve got to win one of the next two games,” said Herskowitz. “We’re going into both of them like they are must wins. “
New City plays Wilkes County on Saturday and Muntinlupa Little League from the Phillipines on Sunday.
