New City Coronavirus Updates

Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is affecting New City.

NEW CITY, NY —The new coronavirus outbreak in New York and across the nation is having vast impacts in Rockland County, including the closure of schools, most businesses and houses of worship. Restaurants have had to limit business to take-out and delivery.

The number of cases of the illness caused by the virus, known as COVID-19, continue to rise and additional measures continue to be announced.

As of Friday afternoon, there were 1,694 positive cases of coronavirus in Rockland, county officials reported.

Officials also reported the 8th death within Rockland County due to the new coronavirus. The person, who died Thursday, was 71 and had other significant health problems. The total number of deaths in Rockland County due to COVID-19 is currently 8.

There were 44,635 cases in New York state as of Friday morning, and 6,481 people were currently hospitalized.

New York State has been put on PAUSE: all non-essential workers are directed to work from home and everyone has been required to maintain a 6-foot distance from others in public. Non-essential gatherings of individuals of any size for any reason (e.g. parties, celebrations or other social events) are canceled. Sick individuals should not leave their home unless to receive medical care and only after a telehealth visit to determine if leaving the home is in the best interest of their health.

ORDERS

A 'Commissioner's Standing Isolation Order' issued March 25 requires any Rocklander who has tested positive to be isolated. A resident who does not follow this isolation order may be fined up to $2,000 per day.

The order is needed to separate sick people from healthy people, to help prevent the spread of the virus known officially as COVID-19, county officials said. Rockland Issues Isolation Order After 7 Deaths.

The Commissioner of Health's School Closure Order reads in part:

The presence of students in public and private, primary, secondary and post-secondary schools and educational institutions in Rockland County poses an imminent and significant threat to the public health and safety of the residents of and visitors to the County as well as a public health hazard and that the students' presence in schools creates an unnecessary and avoidable risk of spreading the COVID-19 pandemic in Rockland County and is therefore a public health nuisance.

A school that does not follow this order can be fined $2,000.

If you see something that may be a potential violation of either order, Rockland County health officials ask you to report it by calling 845-364-2585.

The Clarkstown school district offers these learning resources online for students and parents.

TOWN ANNOUNCEMENTS

Due to the concern of the spread of the Coronavirus, all Clarkstown Community Centers are closed to the public until April 13. All playgrounds are closed until further notice. The dog park at Congers Lake Memorial Park is closed until further notice.
