NEW CITY, NY — A phone scam targeting an elderly woman in Pomona was foiled Wednesday by a sharp-witted drug-store employee. Clarkstown police had just put out a fraud alert, warning about gift-card scams victimizing senior citizens.
The scams get more and more sophisticated. This time the caller claimed to be an agent with the Social Security Administration who was calling because the victim, 72, had been the victim of a scam. He told her that she needed to purchase gift cards because her Visa card was going to be canceled. He instructed her to go immediately and buy the gift cards, and called the victim while she was at the store.
But an employee noting the $3,000 worth of gift cards had called the cops.
