New City Plans Pep Rally for Softball Team Headed to the Little League World Series

Thursday's event honors Eastern Region Champs

After arriving on fire trucks with police escorts, the New City Little League 11-12 Softball All Stars will be introduced individually on stage at Thursday’s . New City Little League, Clarkstown Town, Clarkstown Police and New City Fire Department officials planned the send-off for the 13-member team, which is headed for the Little League World Series in Portland, OR. The players will ride in fire trucks from Maple Avenue to Zukor Park for their grand entrance to the 6:30 p.m. event.

Town Board Member Frank Borelli said a proclamation honoring the team will be read and their Manager Michael Herskowitz will speak about the team, which won the Eastern Region Championship on Saturday after having won the New York State title earlier in July. The World Series begins on Thursday, August 11 and ends on Wednesday, August 17 with the championship game and closing ceremonies.

After the Pep Rally planning session on Tuesday, Borelli joined Little League President Lon Hofstein, team parents and league board members to discuss the trip to Oregon.

“The league is so proud of all you parents and the girls,” said Hofstein.

Herskowitz told the enthusiastic parents the tournament consists of 10 teams from all over the globe. Those teams are divided into two pools of five teams. New City will play the other four teams in its pool and two teams will advance from each pool to the semi finals.

“Once you’re in the final four, you’re two games away from the championship,” he said.

The World Series Little League covers the expenses for the team members and their coaches and manager. Families who want to attend the games must pay their own way. Hofstein said members of most team families are planning to make the trip. The New City Little League is trying to help them by seeking corporate sponsors to defray offset the costs such as airfare, which run as high as $1,000 per person, hotels, meals and other expenses.

The league already received $500 contributions from:

  • IBEW Local 363
  • Clarkstown Town Board
  • New City Chamber of Commerce
  • Clarkstown PBA
  • Provident Bank

Brega Transport is providing free bus transportation for the entire team to and from the airport.
