NYC Educators Fined for Buying House Together in New City--Before Marriage
The problem wasn't the relationship, it was the joint financial transaction.

Regina Shin and David Neering met at work, fell in love, and decided to get married.
As part of their plan for their future together, they found and bought a house in New City.
Trouble is, they bought the house in 2013 and got married in 2014. And that’s a problem because Neering is a principal at a Bronx elementary school, and Shin was a teacher there.

It’s not against New York City’s education laws for a staffer and her supervisor to live together. But it is against the City Charter for them to enter into a financial relationship—i.e. joint ownership of a house.
“You can’t put a price on love—except in the city school system,” the New York Post wrote in its Oct. 31 article on the couple.

Neering and Shin were married Oct. 4. The city’s Conflict of Interest Board hit them with fines Oct. 24, the Post reported.
