Offense Lifts Boulders To Victory

(RAMAPO, NY) – The Rockland Boulders (30-22) defeated the American Association’s Lincoln Saltdogs (29-29) by a score of 7-4 in the opening game of a three-game set at Provident Bank Park. The Boulders scored multiple runs in three different innings in order to get the victory.

Rockland opened the game with a bang in the first inning by scoring two runs within the first three hitters of the game. Matt Nandin led off with a single and Antone DeJesus drove him in with a triple off the right-center field wall. DeJesus would score in the next at-bat when Ryan Stovall roped a double into center field, giving the Boulders a 2-0 lead.

After surrendering the lead to Lincoln in the third inning, the Boulders responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. Rockland batted around in the inning and opened the scoring in the inning on a balk by Lincoln’s starting pitcher Justin Kuks with Nandin on third. Joe Maloney drove in Stovall later in the inning on an RBI single and Jerod Edmondson would also come around to score in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Will Walsh.

The Boulders would score two more insurance runs later in the seventh inning, thanks to a solo homer by Jerod Edmondson, his sixth of the year. Stephen Cardullo would also pick up an RBI in the seventh by driving in Joe Maloney on a deep double down the right field line to give Rockland a 7-4 lead.

Six different Boulders drove in runs for Rockland in the victory, and Nandin, Edmondson, Cardullo and Maloney each had multi-hit games. Maloney also extended his home hitting streak to nine consecutive games at Provident Bank Park.

Greg Terhune (2-5) picked up the win for Rockland by pitching seven innings after overcoming a rocky start to the game with the help of the strikeout. Terhune had nine strikeouts, a season high, while only walking two Saltdog batters. After giving up four runs on six hits in the first four innings, Terhune buckled down and finished his day by tossing three hitless and scoreless innings. Justin Kuks (4-2) took the loss for Lincoln by giving up seven runs on ten hits over seven innings of work. Kuks walked four batters to go along with just two strikeouts in the defeat.

Dan Harm of Stony Point, N.Y. was the 500,000th fan in Rockland Boulders history and was honored before the game. Friday’s game was also the first game of Rockland’s Western Weekend and fans will most certainly not want to miss out on the rest of the festivities. The Boulders return to Provident Bank Park tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. to take on the Saltdogs in game two of the series!
