Pedestrian Safety: Police Checkpoint And Education in Ramapo

An enforcement operation will take place Wednesday, two days after a mom and kids were critically injured by a driver on Route 59.

RAMAPO, NY — In the wake of a horrific incident in which a mom and kids, including a 3-month-old in a stroller, were hit by a car on Route 59, Ramapo police are conducting an operation this week.

It's an enforcement campaign. The cops will set up checkpoints and use the pedestrian crosswalks on Wednesday. Those who don't stop — tickets.

Next officers will focus on the other common violation related to pedestrian safety: Pedestrians who violate “Walk/Don’t Walk” signals.

"Ramapo PD has been working on Education in a variety of ways including our Adopt A Cop program, in which children are taught about pedestrian safety in the schools. An effort has also been made in the community to educate civic associations and other residents. Also, in the past, five details have been conducted using a pedestrian decoy where in excess of 250 warnings were given out to drivers who violated laws related to pedestrians," the department said on Facebook. "Our education will now focus on pedestrians who violate laws related to pedestrian safety."
