Police: New City Man Hits Fire Hydrant, Charged With DWI

Driver unhurt; United Water repairs hydrant on New City street.

A New City man who struck a fire hydrant on a New City street is accused of drunken driving, according to Clarkstown police.

Manimala James, 49, was arrested after police investigated an accident on Parliament Drive at about 9 p.m. Police said James failed a field sobriety test and later failed a chemical breath test for alcohol at police headquarters in New City.

James was released this morning pending a hearing in Clarkstown Town Court in New City on a charge of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Police said James was not injured in the accident and that the fire hydrant was repaired by a United Water Co. crew.
