THE REMARKABLE STORY OF ROCKLAND'S WATER VICTORY & WHAT WE NEED TO DO NEXT!

This December, Rockland environmental advocates won a major victory for Rockland residents and for the environment when the NYS Public Service Commission listened and then ruled to abandon a proposal from Suez (formerly United Water) for a desalination plant that would have drawn water from the Hudson River 3.5 miles downstream from Indian Point nuclear power plant for Rockland’s drinking water.

The desalination plant would have been highly energy intensive, massively expensive, unnecessary, sited in irreplaceable river habitat, and in close proximity to an aging, leaking nuclear power plant.

Now we in Rockland County have the opportunity to create a new water policy that can be a model for the northeast. What would such a policy look like? And what can the public do to help?

We’ll also take a step back to understand Rockland’s water issues in the larger context of the of our fresh water sources, climate change impacts, and the need to manage our precious water resources more sustainably.

It will take the whole community to reshape basic habits and thinking. As we learn to be water smart for Rockland, we are building a stronger, more resilient community too.

This is a fast growing issue that affects every one of us.
