Just shows it's important to check your tickets

Five siblings from Haverstraw and Stony Point have claimed the Powerball second prize of $1 million from the January 13 drawing.

Yanelly Peralta of Stony Point, Eddy Peralta of Stony Point, Carmen Martinez of Haverstraw, Jose Peralta of West Haverstraw and Deyanira Peralta of Haverstraw play almost every week, they told lottery officials.

“Sometimes we play the for-life scratch-off games too,” said Yannelly Peralta.

Yannelly said the siblings take turns purchasing their tickets.

“Eddy bought this ticket. He called me and told me to check the numbers; he didn’t say anything else. So I checked the Web site and saw we won. I called him back and said ‘Now I know why you told me to check.’”

The siblings will each receive their prize in a one-time lump sum amount of $200,000, netting them each $132,360 after required withholdings. They plan to use their winnings to pay bills, save for college and take a family vacation, lottery officials said.

Yanelly said they were surprised and grateful, “Even if we won $10, we would be grateful.”

The winning numbers from the January 13 Powerball drawing were 04-08-19-27-34 and Powerball 10.

The New York Lottery contributed $29,982,316 in Lottery Aid To Education to school districts throughout the Rockland County during fiscal year 2014-2015.
