New City, NY (February 25, 2014) – Rockland County Legislator Ilan S. Schoenberger has introduced a local law to create a policy for the prompt payment of debts and obligations incurred by the county. The proposed law would mandate the county to pay its contractors, contract agencies, vendors and others within thirty days from the final approval of required vouchers and invoices.

If the law is adopted, a long-standing practice that has caused hardship for many that do business with the County would be eliminated explained Schoenberger. “By no means does the county of Rockland fail in its obligation to pay its debts for purchases and services, however, many of our bills that are approved for payment, do not get paid for as long as 90 days. In some instances, the checks are issued within that time period but not sent to the party until several weeks later.”

“This drawn-out procedure causes great difficulty for contract agencies and vendors, who must often must borrow from other sources in order to meet their own financial obligations,” said Schoenberger. “We should not inflict hardship upon people who do business with or receive payments from the county.”
Schoenberger’s proposal will appear on an upcoming agenda of the Legislature’s Budget and Finance Committee, which generally meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
