The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland and Ulster counties.
The watch is in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday.
An additional Hazardous Weather Outlook said there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms ahead of a strong cold front this afternoon into early this evening.
The main threat is damaging winds of 58 mph or greater, the NWS said.
The thunderstorms are expected to move quickly from west to east at 40 to 45 mph.
Locally heavy downpours could cause flooding in low lying areas and ponding of water on roadways is possible from the rainfall combined with snow melt.
The risk of gusty winds continues later Saturday through Sunday.
