Some Power Restoration Estimates For The Hudson Valley: Update

See which communities were hardest hit when the Halloween storm roared through uprooting trees and tearing down electric lines.

UPDATE, 12:30 p.m. — Work continues to restore power to the 100,000 customers in the Hudson Valley affected by the Halloween storm, whose high winds and heavy rains roared through the region overnight, uprooting trees, toppling utility poles and tearing down electric lines.

NYSEG did not offer estimation times for:

  • 6,722 customers still without power in Dutchess County, most in Amenia and Dover
  • 1,844 in Putnam County, most in Kent
  • 685 in Ulster County, most in Shandaken;
  • 2,054 in Westchester County, most in Bedford and Lewisboro.

  • 12,996 customers out of power in Ulster County, most in Hurley and Marbletown
  • 7,388 customers out of power in Dutchess, most in Red Hook.

However the company says power should be restored by this evening to the 1,832 in Orange County and 189 in Putnam.

Orange & Rockland Utilities reported at noon that their crews have restored power to more than 10,000 of the 18,800 customers in New York and New Jersey whose electricity was knocked out by last night’s destructive storm. Most are in Sullivan County. The vast majority of customers are due to be restored to service by 5 p.m. and the remaining by 11 p.m. Friday.

Con Ed reports the 1,855 customers still out in Westchester should have power restored by 11 p.m. Friday. Most are in Briarcliff Manor, Greenburgh, Harrison, Mamaroneck, North Castle, Rye and Yonkers.


HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The Halloween storm that blew through New York dropped 2-5 inches of rain, and its high gusty winds sent crews out overnight to deal with widespread outages. As of 8:30 a.m., there were about 94,000 customers without power.

The National Weather Service warns of wind gusts of 50 mph in the lower Hudson Valley and to 60 mph on Friday in the mid-Hudson Valley resulting in more downed branches, trees and power lines, power outages and isolated structural damage.

The highest wind in Westchester overnight was 56 mph clocked at the Tappan Zee Light.

NYSEG reports 59,443 customers out of power including 8,916 in Dutchess County, most in Beekman and Dover; 2,513 out in Putnam County, most in Kent and Patterson; and 294 out in Ulster, as of 8:23 a.m.

Cen Hud reports 30, 727 customers out of power. Most are in Ulster County, 14, 370; Dutchess, 8,370; and Orange, 2,501.

Orange & Rockland Utilities reported 4,228 customers out, mostly in Orange and Sullivan counties.

Con Ed reported 3,649 out of service, 3,216 of them in Westchester — including 756 in Greenburgh, 336 in Rye, 321 in Yorktown, 298 in Briarcliff Manor and 296 in Sleepy Hollow.

The period of greatest impact in the mid-Hudson on Friday:

  •  Flood Watch: through 8 pm today
  •  Wind Advisory: through 8 pm today
  •  High Wind Warning: 5 am to 6 pm today (strongest winds 8 am to 4 pm)

The storm hit central New York hard, causing flash flooding in places like Dolgeville which is bisected by the East Canada Creek.
