UPDATE: Congers Train Fire was in Engine Compartment

CSX reports no freight was affected.

At about 7:50 AM Wednesday the Clarkstown Police Department responded to a fire on a southbound freight train in the Congers area operated by CSX. One of the two locomotives had a small fire onboard.

The train was about ½ mile north of the Lake Road Congers train crossing, police said.

Congers, Valley Cottage and New City Fire Departments as well as the Congers Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the situation.

The crew of a CSX freight train reported the fire was in the engine compartment of the lead locomotive on the train, said CSX spokesman Rob Dolittle. The crew stopped the train safely and no one was injured.

CSX personnel arrived on scene to evaluate the situation shortly after the fire was reported, Dolittle said.

The train involved was traveling from Selkirk, NY to Pavona, NJ. There are four locomotives on the train and 37 freight cars carrying a variety of freight, including construction debris, soybean oil, solvents and plastics components. None of the freight on the train was involved in the fire.

The fire has been extinguished and there is no threat to the public at this time, police said.

Emergency services and CSX personnel expected to be at the location investigating the scene throughout the day.
