Worcester Sweeps Boulders

Tornadoes hitting keeps them ahead of Boulders.

The Worcester Tornadoes swept a double header from the Rockland Boulders Monday in Can-Am League baseball action.

Worcester 5, Rockland 2 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

The Tornadoes got home runs from third baseman Mark Minicozzi and catcher Alex Trezza and defeated Rockland, 5-2.

The homer was Minicozzi's only hit, while Trezza scored three times while going 2-for-2 with a double and a walk in addition to the blast. The Boulders pulled within one run at 3-2 on a Norm Hutchins RBI double in the sixth inning. But Rockland never pulled even, and the Tornadoes led all the way to their victory.

Starting Worcester pitcher Zach Zuercher threw all seven innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on only four hits while striking out four Boulders.

Worcester 5, Rockland 4 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

Tornadoes first baseman Chris Colabello hit run-producing doubles in the third and fifth innings to lead the Worcester effort in their 5-4, Game 2 win over Rockland.

Colabello's fifth-inning two-bagger brought in two and gave the Tornadoes enough scores to take the win — despite a seventh-inning solo homer from Rockland left fielder Jeremy Slayden. Until that point, Rockland answered Worcester after each and every run-scoring frame with just as many in the next, tying twice but never taking a lead.

Tornadoes starting pitcher Shawn Gilblair struck out 10 while allowing four runs in six and a third innings.
