Car Crash Closes New Hyde Park Road Saturday

One drive taken to hospital after SUV rolls over in high-speed crash.

A car accident involving an SUV and sedan closed New Hyde Park Road from Evergreen Avenue to Dallas Avenue Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m.

According to bystanders at the scene, a young female witnessed the sand-colored SUV travelling northbound on New Hyde Park Road at a high rate of speed, possibly in excess of 70 mph, and allegedly failed to stop at a red light by the New Hyde Park Road School.

The sedan involved in the accident was being driven by an 81-year old man who was exiting Evergreen Avenue attempting to make a turn when it impacted the SUV, causing it to roll-over several times, impacting both a LIPA pole and a small tree before coming to rest on the western side of the road, partially on a median.

The 42-year old driver of the SUV was allegedly not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, landing in the roadway according to bystanders at the scene. Nassau County Police confirmed that he was taken to an area hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.

The 81-year old man was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for a knee injury.

Nassau County Police Crime Scene Investigators were at the scene and had the road blocked off in both directions until 5:27 p.m. They report that there was no apparent criminality.
