The GU13 NHP Firecats are ENY State Open Cup Champions for their second year in a row! The Firecats had to get through some tough games namely Manhattan and Famingdale teams to make the Saturday May 31st finals in LaGrange. The girls had a rematch of last years final as their opponents were once again against the always competitive and well trained HBC Impact 00.
The Firecats were down by a goal early in the game and while they settled down and played well the score was still 0-1 at the half. The players came in for the break confident as they saw the game turning and trainer Steve Price highlighted that we have scored against some of the top teams in the country and that we will get a goal but need to keep up our defensive work. Despite their best efforts and having moved the game to the opponents half , the score remained 0-1 until about 2 minutes of regulation time. Realizing there was potentially only one more opportunity to score, Izzy Glennon made a run and was able to chip one in over the keepers head. Needless to say, the Firecat players, coaches and parents couldn't have been more excited and the game would go to overtime, very much like last years final.
The girls having worked so hard for the goal came back to the bench exhausted but still full of spirit and surprisingly less stressed than the adults. The players settled in for the two overtime periods but as neither team scored so the game went to penalty kicks. Our girls managed to pull out the win in penalty kicks 3-1 and again will head to Rhode Island to represent Eastern NY at the Region 1 tournament at the end of June.
