Martins, St. Francis Bringing Free Heart Health Screening to New Hyde Park
The event takes place Thursday at Herricks Community Center.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, officials say. That’s why Sen. Jack M. Martins, R-Mineola), and St. Francis Hospital are teaming up to help residents receive free heart health screenings.
Martins has arranged to bring St. Francis’ Community Mobile Outreach Van to Herricks Community Center at 999 Herricks Road in New Hyde Park to provide free cardiovascular screenings. The screening program will take place on Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
According to St. Francis Hospital, screenings will include a brief cardiac history, blood pressure check, and a simple blood test for cholesterol and diabetes. Participants will also receive information about steps they can take to reduce their risk of heart disease. Anyone age 18 and over is welcome to participate. Residents will be screened on a first come, first served basis; no pre-registration or appointment is necessary.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for American men and women. It is also the leading cause of death among nearly all ethnic groups. One in every four deaths in the nation is due to heart disease.
