Burke Rehabilitation at United Hebrew of New Rochelle Just Got A Little Better - Newly Renovated Gym Brings Greater Hope of Recovery

“The staff at United Hebrew saved my life.” That was just part of the emotional and heartfelt comments heard from Dr. Donald Scharoff, a “graduate” patient of the Burke Rehabilitation at United Hebrew program at the Westchester County nursing home.  Dr. Scharoff was speaking at the grand reopening of the United Hebrew Beverly and Alfred J. Green Rehabilitation Gym that took place on May 8th at United Hebrew.  The gym was recently renovated through the great generosity of Anthony Nardozzi, United Hebrew Board Member and long time Chair of the Golf Committee.  Mr. Nardozzi, Jr. understands the value of creating a first class rehab environment for the residents of United Hebrew as his father, Anthony Nardozzi, Sr. is a resident.  “It is deeply gratifying knowing that I can give back to the place that has given such outstanding care to my father. He has thrived at United Hebrew.”

Burke Rehabilitation trained therapists provide management and care for the rehab program at United Hebrew.  The renovated gym is a perfect space for assisting patients in transitioning to home after treatment.  It is equipped with a walk-in shower, mock bedroom and kitchen.  The therapists work with patients in the activities of daily living so that they are prepared to be independent in their own homes.

“It may seem as if taking a shower or cooking a meal is easy, but when you have had trauma or weakness from hospitalization, you need a lot of practice and relearned skill building to have full use of your balance, flexibility and strength.”  Said Nora O’Brien,DPT, Director of the Burke Rehabilitation at United Hebrew program. “Our Occupational Therapists are trained to work with each patient to help them be safe and functional in their home environment.”

New equipment has begun to arrive as well.  That includes the LiteGait System where patients with difficulty walking can now be safely supported with a harness, allowing the devise to assist them to stand while the therapist facilitates ambulation.  The therapists are focused on returning patients home in the shortest amount of time possible, at the greatest level of independence possible. Rita Mabli, President and CEO commented, “We are so deeply grateful to our sponsor, Tony Nardozzi. This renovation was vital to our core philosophy of providing the very best rehabilitation care for our residents.”
